ONGC Blast Surat

Another ONGC Disaster in 2020

Recent images and videos of huge fire in ONGC Surat is a stark reminder that the cursed year 2020 is not over yet. On 24th September 2020, residents near #Surat woke up to the sound of a huge blast around 3 am to see massive flames from #Hazira #ONGC. The shock-waves from the blast could be felt up to 3 – 4 km, shaking buildings and damaging windows.

Massive fire engulfing the sky could be seen from miles away. It is estimated that 3 consecutive blast has taken place at 2 terminals at ONGC which led to the fire. All of the 24 terminals has been closed as of now. Residents have reported of smelling gas within 10 km radius of the blast.

Firefighters had reached the spot and were engaged in getting the fire under control. Meanwhile, ONGC tweeted, “A fire was observed in the Hazira Gas processing plant in the morning today. Fire has been brought under control. There is no casualty or injury to any person.”

People have been tweeting the photos and videos of the blast in the twitter-verse with many people comparing it with Chernobyl incident. Many were woken by the sound of the blast and the view of the fire thinking they were being attacked by aliens.

Also a tweet has surfaced from 7 years ago where it was mentioned that some anti social elements were trying to cause blast in ONGC campus Surat. This has piqued the interest of many users about the nature of the blast.

It is to be noted that this is the second such incident that ONGC has to face in the year 2020. Earlier in year, there was a Gas well fire in ONGC Assam which raged for several weeks and damaged a lot of wildlife area around it. Natural gas mixed with condensate started spewing uncontrollably from a well in the Baghjan fields in Tinsukia district of Assam on May 27, leading to a blowout. The officials had to evacuated more than 60,000 people from the neighboring areas.

Hopefully this will be the last of disaster that the petroleum giant has to face in this year.
