When is Indian Independence Day in 2020? Thursday, 15 August
INDEPENDENCE DAY
Independence Day is celebrated on 15th August of every year in India since 1947. India got independence officially from the British Empire on August 15, 1947. During the day, central and state government offices, post offices, schools, and banks are closed.
This year August 15, 2020, is India’s 74th Independence Day. On this day, India witnesses a huge celebration of independence with tricolor flag hoisting, parades, and cultural functions across the country. Independence Day is one of the most significant days in Indian history that commemorates the bravery of our freedom fighters.
INDEPENDENCE DAY in COVID-19
Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, Independence day in 2020 will be different from all the previous years in the history of the country. This year will witness the most subdued and low key Independence celebration we have ever seen.
In the afternoon, during the At Home function in Rashtrapati Bhavan, the focus will be on India’s “Corona Warriors”, with invitations likely to be extended to medical professionals and key figures in the health sector.
“At the Red Fort, instead of the 900-1,000 invitees every year, around 250 people will be present as the Prime Minister addresses the nation,” an official with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) told The Indian Express. The final list will be prepared by the Defence Ministry.
Why should it be Celebrated?
The great non-violence movement of Mahatma Gandhi along with the sacrifice of freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, etc, the creator of first Indian National Army Subhas Chandra Bose and many unnamed sacrifices helped us to get freedom from the British Raj, after 200 long years of struggle.
The hard struggle for Independence of India has worked as a huge moving force for every Indian which binds them together in one place whether they belong to different castes, classes, cultures to ritual beliefs to fight them from British rule for their rights.
Even Indian women (Aruna Asaf Ali, Vijay Laxmi Pandit, Sarojini Naidu, Kasturba Gandhi, Kamala Nehru, Annie Besant, etc) came out from their houses and played their great role in getting freedom.
This is the day when we think about how we became a nation as we are today. Even after facing numerous invasions from many forces, we still hold on to our culture and values and are lucky enough to breathe the free air.
It’s a time to reflect and do introspection about what we have achieved so far in the past 73 years of independence, and how to work together to bring more than 300 million people out of poverty and rocket the country to the tip of the world.
